For weeks I have been brewing a blog post in my head about women and voting. I know what I want to say, but organizing and writing it in a way that is meaningful and effective has been a stumbling block for me.
Mostly, I'm disappointed, hurt and insulted at those (and many of them being friends) who proclaim that any self-respecting woman could never vote Republican.
Last night during the debate, a facebook friend posted something similar to the above statement and when I responded that I would vote for Romney, one of her friends thought it appropriate to "insult" me by asking if I was gay? First of all, this is a laughable insult and secondly, in this day and age, it's perplexing that someone would respond to my comment in that manner....I thought we were moving toward acceptance and equality for the LGBT community...
But Focusing back on my point about being a woman AND a conservative; I found this great article authored by Laura Vanderkam, of USA Today, titled Why Women Might Vote Republican. Ms. Vanderkam understands how a woman can be socially liberal (i.e. pro-choice, pro same sex marriage) but fiscally conservative and how we must prioritize issues when it comes to voting.
And while the column really articulates where I'm coming from, she sums up perfectly the whole reason why I feel betrayed by females who think that only "real" women vote for Democrats: ".... poke a little deeper into the belief that no intelligent woman would vote Republican because of the party's stand on abortion, and you start to see the same sexism that informs the Neanderthal wing of the GOP -- namely, that there's nothing more to women than their reproductive capacity. It's a sad belief, really, coming from either side."
We don't have to tear each other down, simply because we have different views and opinions.
Love and be loved.
I’m really impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to see a nice blog like this one nowadays..
